15 organisations from across Europe have asked their national football teams to commit to sustainable travel for Euro 2024, avoiding flights and opting for means of transport such as rail to reach Germany and/or to move within the country.

Changing the way we travel is fundamental to meeting the Paris Agreement commitment to limit global warming to below 1.5°C. Football, and in particular national teams, could play an important role in this fight against climate change.

In this sense, 15 European organisations united in the framework of the Travel Smart campaign are calling on all members of the national football teams to commit to sustainable travel during Euro 2024 by choosing low-emission means of transport, such as rail, and avoiding high-emission flights, in the case of Spain especially for travel within Germany.

Through these letters, we invite the various national teams to become a role model, both on and off the pitch, to help change people’s thinking and behaviour when it comes to travelling and to lead by example when it comes to the teams’ transport options.

UEFA and German railway company Deutsche Bahn signed an agreement to encourage fans to travel to and within Germany by train. This is an important step and opportunity, and we believe that national teams can not only match it, but go further.
